＜起＞
双子の兄妹（A:セバスチャン）と（B:ヴァイオラ）の乗った船が嵐に遭い、（B:ヴァイオラ）はイリリアの海岸に打ち上げられる。彼女は「消息の分からない兄」（A）を死んだと思い、身を守るために兄そっくりに男装して（B’：シザーリオ）と名乗り、イリリアの公爵である（C:オーシーノ）に小姓として仕えることにする。（C:オーシーノ）は、伯爵の娘である（D:オリヴィア）に恋をしていたが、彼女の「兄の喪に服したい」という理由で断られ続けていた。
＜承＞
（B’：シザーリオ）をすっかり気に入った（C:オーシーノ）は、（D:オリヴィア）に自分の気持ちを伝えてくれるよう命じる。密かに（C:オーシーノ）に淡い思いを抱いていた（B:ヴァイオラ）はその命令に苦しむが、小姓（B’）としてその勤めを果たす。（C:オーシーノ）の想いを拒む（D:オリヴィア）だったが、使者としてやって来た（B’：シザーリオ）に心を奪われてしまう。それに気が付いた（B:ヴァイオラ）は、実るはずのない自分への（D:オリヴィア）の想いを、（C:オーシーノ）への自分の想いと重ねて悲しむ。
一方、
（B:ヴァイオラ）がてっきり死んだと思っていた双子の兄（A:セバスチャン）は、別の船の船長（E:アントニオ）に助けられており、彼と共にイリリアにやって来ていた。（E:アントニオ）は（A:セバスチャン）を気に入っていたが、（C:オーシーノ）と過去に因縁がある関係で、（A:セバスチャン）と別れて人目に付かないよう行動していた。
（D:オリヴィア）には（C:オーシーノ）の他にも求婚者がおり、（D:オリヴィア）の叔父の遊び仲間である（F:アンドルー）もその一人だった。愛しい（D:オリヴィア）が公爵の小姓（B’）に熱を上げていると聞いた（F:アンドルー）は、（D:オリヴィア）の叔父にそそのかされて（B’：シザーリオ）に決闘を申し込む。（B’：シザーリオ）は仕方なくその決闘を受けたが、（B’：シザーリオ）のことを（A:セバスチャン）だと思い込んだ（E:アントニオ）が割って入り決闘を止める。その後警備員に捕まってしまった（E:アントニオ）だったが、（B:ヴァイオラ）は、彼が自分の事を（A:セバスチャン）と呼ぶのを聞いて、兄（A）が生きていることを知る。
その頃、イリリア見物をしていた（A:セバスチャン）は、偶然に（D:オリヴィア）と出会う。（A:セバスチャン）は見ず知らずの美しい姫（D）に求婚されて夢ではないかと戸惑うも、その申し出を受け入れる。（D:オリヴィア）は（B’：シザーリオ）に今まで頑なに拒まれてきたこともあり、相手の気が変わらぬうちにとすぐに結婚式を挙げる。
＜クライマックス＞
その後、（D:オリヴィア）と出会った（C:オーシーノ）は彼女に求婚するも、いつも通り断られてしまう。さらには彼女が自分の小姓（B’）を「夫」と呼ぶのを聞いて、裏切られたと思った（C:オーシーノ）は（B’：シザーリオ）に激怒する。身に覚えのない（B:ヴァイオラ）はそれを否定するが、今度は（D:オリヴィア）が裏切られたと叫ぶ。
＜転＞
そんな口論の最中に（A:セバスチャン）が現れ、一同は驚く。（B:ヴァイオラ）と（A:セバスチャン）は互いに素性を確かめ合い、別れ別れになっていた兄妹と知る。
＜結＞
（B:ヴァイオラ）を男と思って求婚した（D:オリヴィア）は恥じ入ったが、（D:オリヴィア）も（A:セバスチャン）も、お互いに悪い気はせず、一方の（C:オーシーノ）は（B’：シザーリオ）が女だと知り、改めて求婚する。こうして二組のカップルがめでたく誕生した。
