The population of Tokyo will peak at 13.36 million in 2020, when the city hosts the Summer Olympic Games, and then go into sharp decline, figures show.
The Tokyo metropolitan government said the population will drop by 20 percent in the subsequent 40 years.
According to the estimates, the population of Tokyo stood at 13.16 million in 2010. After 2020, the population is projected to decrease, reaching 10.36 million in 2060, almost the same level as in 1963.
A graying population and low birthrates are expected to continue.
People aged between 15 and 64--the so-called production age population--totaled 8.85 million in 2010, accounting for 67.3 percent. However, those figures will decline to 5.53 million and 53.4 percent, respectively, in 2060.
The metropolitan government is set to compile a “long-term vision” within this year to decide policies for the next 10 years for things like urban planning, child-rearing support and nursing care services.

東京（とうきょう、英語: Tokyo）とは、
