A quarter of the population for the first time on Sept. 16 was honored on a national holiday dedicated to recognizing and thanking elderly citizens.
The number of people who are 65 years of age or older reached 31.86 million as of Sept. 15, the first time that age group has comprised 25 percent of the nation's total population, according to a survey by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. 
A study by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research estimates that by 2035, 33.4 percent of the nation's population will be 65 years or older.
