主人公バスチアンはいじめられっ子で、母を亡くしてからは父親と2人だけの寂しい生活を送っていた。そんなある日、いじめっ子から逃げるために飛び込んだコレアンダー書店で彼は不思議な本「ネバーエンディング・ストーリー」と出会う。
本を読むと物語の主人公になれる、本の世界で龍に乗れる、だから本が好きだと力説する彼に書店の主は「だが、それらの本は読み終われば現実に戻される。この本は危険だ。」と止めるが、どうしても読んでみたいバスチアンはこっそりとその本を盗んでしまった。
学校をサボって本を読み始めたバスチアンはネバーエンディング・ストーリーの世界に浸り始める。その本は、『虚無 (The Nothing)』による崩壊の危機に瀕した不思議な異世界「ファンタージェン」を救う目的を持った、草原の勇者アトレイユの旅立ちの物語である。
アトレイユには、お守りとして「アウリン」が授けられるが、この明暗二匹の蛇が互いに相手の尾を咬んで楕円になった形状（ウロボロス）のメダルには、不思議な力が宿る、とされ、勇者アトレイユを真の道へと導いていく。
本の中の壮大な「ファンタージェン」を舞台にし、主人公とともに冒険を味わい、物語に胸躍らせるバスチアンだが物語が進んでに行くにつれ、ついにくるべき結末がやってくる。
圧倒的に強大な『虚無 (The Nothing)』によるファンタージェンの世界の崩壊、破壊はとどまるところを知らず、すべてを破壊し飲み込んでいく。物語はバスチアン自身も驚く思わぬ結末を迎えることに・・

『はてしない物語』（はてしないものがたり）とは、
ドイツの作家ミヒャエル・エンデによる、児童向けファンタジー小説である。1979年刊。前後半に分かれる2部構成。前半では主人公の少年・バスチアン（Bastian）がひょんなことから手にした本『はてしない物語』に描かれた世界「ファンタージエン」の崩壊を救い、後半ではバスチアン自身が「ファンタージエン」の世界に入り込み、そこでの旅を通じて本当の自分を探す。
物語の本筋から反れた際に「これは別の物語、いつかまた、別のときにはなすことにしよう」という言葉で、本筋に戻ることが特徴。また、主に前半部分においては、バスチアンのいる現実世界ともう一人の主人公アトレーユが旅をする本の世界（ファンタージエン）の2つの世界を並行して描いており、現実世界でのストーリーは赤茶色の文字、ファンタージエンでのストーリーは緑色の文字で印刷されている。
映画版『ネバーエンディング・ストーリー』は、原作はミヒャエル・エンデの『はてしない物語』だが、オリジナルの話とは終わり方が異なっている。
映画版『ネバーエンディング・ストーリー』 あらすじ
主人公バスチアンはいじめられっ子で、母を亡くしてからは父親と2人だけの寂しい生活を送っていた。そんなある日、いじめっ子から逃げるために飛び込んだコレアンダー書店で彼は不思議な本「ネバーエンディング・ストーリー」と出会う。
本を読むと物語の主人公になれる、本の世界で龍に乗れる、だから本が好きだと力説する彼に書店の主は「だが、それらの本は読み終われば現実に戻される。この本は危険だ。」と止めるが、どうしても読んでみたいバスチアンはこっそりとその本を盗んでしまった。
学校をサボって本を読み始めたバスチアンはネバーエンディング・ストーリーの世界に浸り始める。その本は、『虚無 (The Nothing)』による崩壊の危機に瀕した不思議な異世界「ファンタージェン」を救う目的を持った、草原の勇者アトレイユの旅立ちの物語である。
アトレイユには、お守りとして「アウリン」が授けられるが、この明暗二匹の蛇が互いに相手の尾を咬んで楕円になった形状（ウロボロス）のメダルには、不思議な力が宿る、とされ、勇者アトレイユを真の道へと導いていく。
本の中の壮大な「ファンタージェン」を舞台にし、主人公とともに冒険を味わい、物語に胸躍らせるバスチアンだが物語が進んでに行くにつれ、ついにくるべき結末がやってくる。
圧倒的に強大な『虚無 (The Nothing)』によるファンタージェンの世界の崩壊、破壊はとどまるところを知らず、すべてを破壊し飲み込んでいく。物語はバスチアン自身も驚く思わぬ結末を迎えることに・・
物語を救うのは、アトレイユでも王女でもなく、意外な人物であった。
