VIZ Media is gearing up to delight magical-girl fans across the US with the home media release of Sailor Moon R: The Movie on April 18. The first feature inspired by Naoko Takeuchi’s classic manga and anime franchise made its warmly received North American theatrical premiere a few months ago, over 20 years after its initial Japanese debut.
The movie will be released as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (MSRP $29.98 US / $34.99 CAN) and Standard Edition DVD ($19.98 / $24.99) featuring uncut English dubbed as well as original Japanese dialogue with subtitles on both formats. 『銀河鉄道の夜』（ぎんがてつどうのよる）とは、
宮沢賢治の童話作品。孤独な少年ジョバンニが、友人カムパネルラと銀河鉄道の旅をする物語で、宮沢賢治童話の代表作のひとつとされている。作者逝去のため未定稿のまま遺されたこと、多くの造語が使われていることなどもあって、研究家の間でも様々な解釈が行われている。
銀河鉄道の夜 あらすじ
ジョバンニは、家が貧しく、母親が病気のため、朝は新聞配達、放課後は印刷所で働いているが、長らく家に戻らない父のことで、学校ではクラスメイトであるザネリにからかわれ、仲間はずれにされている、孤独な存在である。反対に、同級生のカンパネルラは、裕福な、学校での優等生であり、ジョバンニがザネリたちにからかわれる事を気の毒に思っている。
二人が住んでいる街の行事である星祭りが行われる夜、ザネリたちにからかわれて居場所を失ったジョバンニは、天気輪の柱の丘という名前の丘で一人ぼんやりと寝そべっていた。すると突然目の前がまばゆい光に包まれ、気が付くと彼は銀河鉄道に乗っており、そこにはカンパネルラも乗っていた。彼らは、銀河めぐりの旅の途中に出会う様々な人々と共に会話していく中で、「生きる意味とは何なのか」を考えていく事になる。
ジョバンニは、かほるが話してくれた「焼けて死んださそりの火」の話に胸を打たれて、カンパネルラに、「みんなの本当の幸せの為に、どこまでも一緒に行こう」と誓い合うが、カンパネルラはいつの間にかいなくなってしまう。ジョバンニは、いなくなってしまったカンパネルラの名を叫びながら一人車内で泣いていたが、突然、目が覚め、自分が天気輪の柱の丘にいることに気づく。
夢だったのかと思いながら星祭りの最中の街へ戻ると、カンパネルラが、川で溺れたイジメっ子のザネリを助ける為に自らの命を犠牲にした事実を知る。この瞬間、ジョバンニは「銀河鉄道の旅が何を意味していたのか」に気づいて、みんなの本当の幸せの為に尽くす事が生きる意味なのだ、と悟るのであった。

ある冬の日、みんなは山の中で、ひとりの行き倒れそうになった、乞食のような旅の者を見つけました。凍えそうに寒い山の中で、旅の者は火にあたりながら、念仏を唱え、ただただ死の訪れを待っていました。旅の者は、この数日食事をとっていなかったので、その表情には死の影が浮かんでいました。
4匹の動物たちは心配してかけよりました。旅の者は、自分のこともかまわずに、動物たちを抱き上げて、頭をなでながら、「お前達も寒いのか、さぁ火に当たりなさい」と、やさしく語りかけました。動物達は、その旅の者から溢れるような温かい波動が自分に向かって流れてくるのを感じ、余りに嬉しかったので、「どこでも、いつでも精一杯、精一杯に生きるのよ」という意味の歌をみんなで歌って感謝の気持ちを表しました。
旅の者は、動物達に微笑みながら言いました。「ありがとう、本当にありがとう、わたしを元気づけてくれようとしているんだね」もちろん動物達には意味は分かりません。しかし感謝の気持ちは、旅の者の身体全体から波動となってみんなに伝わっていたのです。
「このままではこの人が死んでしまう。助けなくては、どうにかして助けなくては、どうしよう。どうしよう…」カワウソは大急ぎですみかにもどり、大切にしまっておいた魚をもってきました。キツネもとっておきの肉を、サルは木に登って木の実をとってきました。一方、ウサギは季節がら自分の食べ物さえなくて困っている時だったので、必死になってあちこち食べ物をさがすのですが、どうしても見つかりません。
途方に暮れてもどってきたウサギがひらめいたのは、目の前の火に飛び込むことでした。「自分の身をこの人のために与えてしまおう」そう思った時、ウサギは、命を失う悲しさではなく、この人のために命を捧げる喜びでいっぱいになりました。
ただ心残りは、母ウサギの事でしたが、「今この時、この生を、精一杯生きるならば、母さんも、きっと許してくれるだろう。」と考え、最後にもう一度、小さい声でいつもの歌を口ずさむと、ウサギは一気に真っ赤な火の中にとびこんだのです。旅の者は、余りの急な出来事にびっくりしました。「あのウサギは、自分のような老いぼれを助ける為に、我が身を犠牲にしてくれたのか !?」
すると不思議なことが起こりました。空からは様々な花が降り、高貴な香りもただよってくるではありませんか。ウサギは、身体が丸焼きになると思っていたのに、火はすこしも熱くありません。この火は熱いどころか異常に涼しかったのです。
そしてその時、確かに心で声を聴きました。
「ウサギよ。わたしはおまえが日ごろ言っている施しの心が本当かどうか試していたのだ。だが、おまえの気持ちに偽りはなかった。その慈悲の心と行ないが世界中に広まるよう、月におまえの姿を印そう」
その夜、4匹の動物たちは山の上に集まりました。
「ウサギさん。お月さまの中にあなたとよく似たウサギがいるよ」
「あれはね、わたしの心が映っているんだ。この心が真実ならば、お月さまは明るく輝く。わたしがちょっとでも悪い心をおこしたら暗くなるんだ」

動物たちは笑ってうなずきあいました。
さまよい疲れて、行き倒れで死を覚悟していた聖者でしたが、山を下りながら、自分のこれまで悟りと思っていたものの小ささに愕然としました。何と短絡的でひとりよがりな考えであったかを、動物たちによって教えられたのです。聖者は、自分が恥ずかしくなりました。「もっと精一杯生きよう。ただ山で修行しているだけでは駄目だ。もっと今自分が考えていること、経験したことを世の中の人に伝えて行こう。」
満月はいちだんと明るさをまして、世界中をてらしていました。
