方丈庵 (ほうじょうあん) とは
柴垣をめぐらした苫屋。「方丈記」の舞台。つまり、鴨長明が住んだ庵である。長明は、晩年に京の郊外・日野山に一丈四方（方丈）の小庵をむすび隠棲する。庵に住みつつ当時の世間を観察し書き記した記録を自ら「方丈記」と名づけていた。
春は藤の花、夏はほととぎす、秋はひぐらし、冬は雪、といった自然に囲まれた山の暮らし。山守りの子供と山菜や木の実を拾って楽しむ日々。優雅とも言える隠遁生活だが・・
彼の父親は下鴨神社の禰宜（ねぎ。神官）であり、長明は、その次男で、うまくいけばここの神官になっていた人でした。宮中とのつながりもあって、幼くして従五位下を叙され、順風満帆の人生を歩むかと思いきや、早くに父を亡くし、横やりが入って神社への就職は立ち消えに。20歳台から不遇の人生を送ることになりました。
長明の人生すごろくは、下鴨神社の社家の息子というエリートとして生まれ、和歌や音楽など教養も身に着けたが、ふとしたことから人生の道を転げ落ち、最後は郊外の草庵に隠れ住んで、60余年の生涯を閉じた、というわけなのです。そんな彼だからこそ、無常を感じて「方丈記」を残したのでしょうか？
鴨長明の時代は、大火や飢饉なども多く、自然の前の無力さを感じることで、さらに無常観が大きくなり方丈記を書いたのだとは思います。現代の私たちの暮らしは、もちろん大自然の前では無力ですが、とはいえ、けっして無常観が支配している世界ではありません。
私たちは家を飾ることで、未来に対する力を得たり、前向きな考えになったり愛情を感じたりと、家から生きる活力を得ることが出来ます。鴨長明は、約3ｍｘ3ｍと狭い方丈庵に花などを飾っていたのでしょうか？
方丈記には、無常観だけではなく愛情の素晴らしさも書かれていますので、
きっと方丈庵にも愛情を感じる『素敵な窓掛け』などの飾りがあったのだと思っています。
