古事記（コジキ）とは、
日本最古の歴史書である。その序によれば、和銅5年（712年）に太安万侶が編纂し、元明天皇に献上された。『古事記』の原本は現存せず、幾つかの写本が伝わる。
内容は、神代における天地の始まりから推古天皇の時代に至るまでの様々な出来事（神話や伝説などを含む）が紀伝体で記載される。また、数多くの歌謡を含む。なお、『古事記』は「高天原」という語が多用される点でも特徴的な文書である。
『古事記』は歴史書であるとともに文学的な価値も非常に高く評価され、また日本神話を伝える神典の一つとして、神道を中心に日本の宗教文化・精神文化に多大な影響を与えている。
『古事記』に現れる神々は、現在では多くの神社で祭神として祀られている。一方文化的な側面は日本書紀よりも強く、創作物や伝承等で度々引用されるなど、世間一般への日本神話の浸透に大きな影響を与えている。
中大兄皇子（天智天皇）らによる蘇我入鹿暗殺事件（乙巳の変）に憤慨した蘇我蝦夷は大邸宅に火をかけ自害した。この時に朝廷の歴史書を保管していた書庫までもが炎上したと言われる。『天皇記』など数多くの歴史書はこの時に失われ「国記」は難を逃れ天智天皇に献上されたとされるが、共に現存しない。
天智天皇は白村江の戦いで唐・新羅連合に敗北し、予想された渡海攻撃への準備のため史書編纂の余裕はなかった。その時点で既に諸家の『帝紀』及『本辭』（『旧辞』）は虚実ない交ぜの状態であった。
壬申の乱後、天智天皇の弟である天武天皇が即位し、『天皇記』や焼けて欠けてしまった『国記』に代わる国史の編纂を命じた。その際、28歳で高い識字能力と記憶力を持つ稗田阿礼に『帝紀』及『本辭』（『旧辞』）などの文献を「誦習」させた。その後、元明天皇の命を受け、太安万侶が阿礼の「誦習」していた『帝皇日継』（天皇の系譜）と『先代旧辞』（古い伝承）を編纂し、『古事記』を完成させた。
『古事記』は物語中心に書かれているが、それだけでなく多くの歌謡も挿入されている。これらの歌謡の多くは、民謡や俗謡であったものが、物語に合わせて挿入された可能性が高い。
有名な歌として、須佐之男命が櫛名田比売と結婚したときに歌い、和歌の始まりとされる「八雲たつ 出雲八重垣 妻ごみに 八重垣作る その八重垣を」や、
倭建命が東征の帰途で故郷を想って歌った「倭は国のまほろば たたなづく青垣 山隠れる 倭し うるわし」などがある。
「倭は国のまほろば たたなづく青垣 山ごもれる 倭しうるはし」とは
古事記の伝える所によれば、これは倭建命（やまとたけるのみこと）が亡くなる前に自分の故郷を思い詠まれた歌（思国歌）。
倭（やまと）はもともと今の奈良あたりを指す言葉だったようです。その後に勢力が拡大するに従い「やまと」が指す地域は拡大していきました。その勢力を拡大する立役者の一人である倭建命が奈良という地域を指す言葉として使ったのか、それとも自分たちが拡大している国の名「やまと」を指してこの言葉を使ったのか面白い所です。
「たたなづく」というのは「幾重にも重なっている」の意味ですが、「たた」と連続する音や、「づく」から「続く」という語感を感じれば「連なる」という感じがしてきます。
「山ごもれる」は「隠れる」という字を当てるようですが、この意味は僕には良く分かりません。意味は分かりませんが、前の句から続ければ、山を身近に迫る感じを受けます。
彼が最後に見た風景にもまた山があったろうと思うのです。
「うるうるする」と似た語感の「うるはし」には涙のようなイメージさえあるでしょう。
涙を滲ませている風景、と感じてもいいと思います。自分が最後に見ているだろう風景から、故郷の風景を思い浮かべ国の行く末を案じているのかも知れません。
それぞれの人が それぞれのやまとを まほろばとする。
それを願い倭建命は亡くなったのかもしれません。
今からおよそ1900年前に。
まさか、彼もこんな勝手な解釈をされるなど思ってもみなかったでしょうね。
