ふたご座α星(カストル)付近を放射点として出現する流星群である。
12月5日頃から12月20日頃にかけて出現し、12月14日前後に極大を迎える。
しぶんぎ座流星群、ペルセウス座流星群と並んで、年間三大流星群の1つ。
ふたご座流星群の母天体は長らく謎であったが、
1983年に、NASAが打ち上げた赤外線天文衛星IRASによって、
ふたご座流星群に酷似した軌道を持つ小惑星・(3200)ファエトンが発見され、
現在ではこれが母天体とされている。
すなわちファエトンはかつては彗星であったが、
ガスやチリなどの揮発成分を放出しつくしてしまった天体で、
以前に放出したチリが地球の軌道と交差する軌道を巡っており
ふたご座流星群となっているということである。

天動説 または 地球中心説（Geocentrism）とは、
地球は宇宙の中心にあり静止しており、全ての天体が地球の周りを公転しているとする説で、コスモロジー（宇宙論）の1つの類型のこと。現在では間違いとされる。
地動説（ちどうせつ）とは、
宇宙の中心は太陽であり、地球は他の惑星と共に太陽の周りを自転しながら公転している、という学説のこと。宇宙の中心は地球であるとする天動説（地球中心説）に対義する学説であり、ニコラウス・コペルニクスが唱えた。
ガリレオは1597年にケプラーに宛てた手紙の中ですでに地動説を信じていると記しているが、17世紀初頭まではそれを公言することはなかった。主に（木星の衛星、金星の満ち欠け、太陽黒点）の証拠から、地動説が正しいと確信したガリレオは、この後、地動説に言及することが多くなった。
ガリレオが地動説を唱え、それを理由に有罪判決を受けた事はかなり有名である。この事から、当時地動説を唱えるものはすべて異端とされ、それによって科学の発展が阻害された、という考えがされてきた。しかし現在では、ガリレオが神父たちよりもキリスト教の本質をよく理解し、科学的な言葉でそれを説いていたために快く思われず、でっちあげの偽裁判で有罪判決を受けたのではないか、と指摘されている。
