シーシュポスの岩とは、
シーシュポスは神々を二度までも欺いた罰として、タルタロスで巨大な岩を山頂まで上げるよう命じられた（この岩はゼウスが姿を変えたときのものと同じ大きさといわれる）。 シーシュポスがあと少しで山頂に届くというところまで岩を押し上げると、岩はその重みで底まで転がり落ちてしまい、この苦行が永遠に繰り返される。
このことから「シーシュポスの岩」は、日本での「賽の河原」と同様に、「（果てしない）徒労」を意味する。シーシュポスの末路を恥じた妻のメロペーは、夜空に輝く星の姉妹から離れ、自らの姿を隠したという。これは、紀元前2000年の終わり頃、おうし座のプレアデス星団の星が一つ見えなくなった事実を示しているともいわれる。
賽の河原とは、
此岸（現世）と彼岸（あの世）を分ける境目にあるとされる、三途川（さんずのかわ）の河原の事であり、親不孝の報いで苦を受ける場とされる。
積み石による塔を完成させると、親の供養になると言うが、完成する前に鬼が来て塔を破壊し、再度や再々度塔を築いてもその繰り返しになってしまう。このことから「賽の河原」とは、「報われない努力」「徒労」の意でも使用される。
しかしその親不孝者たちも、最終的には、
「大地が全ての命を育む力を蔵するように、苦悩の人々をその無限の大慈悲の心で包み込み救う」姿から名付けられた、地蔵菩薩によって救済されると言われている。ただし、いずれにしても民間信仰による俗信であり、仏教とは本来関係がない。

コマーシャルメッセージ (commercial message) とは、
「商業用の伝言」全般を指す。本来は、マス媒体に限らない。しかし、ラジオ・テレビの普及とともに、民間放送でラジオ番組・テレビ番組の前後や番組の途中に流される、短い広告放送のことを指すことが一般的になっている。コマーシャル、CMとも略され、お知らせという言葉が使用されることもある。広義のCMに対して、テレビ・映画・インターネットなどの「動画広告」を特に区別する場合は、CF (commercial film) と呼称している。

CM と サブリミナル
一瞬だけ製品映像を挿入して意識に刷り込む、サブリミナル効果を狙った手法のCMが作られることがある。サブリミナルが話題になり始めた1980年代から2000年以前までは放送されるケースがあった。話題性や短期間に効果を出す事を期待して行われるなど動機はさまざまだが、実際の効果に疑問符が付いている点もあり、また人をあざむく行為だとして禁止されている。テレビ局の事前審査で中止を促される場合があり、現在ではほとんど行われていない。
CM と 3B
CMは限られた秒数内で企業や商品のイメージ、購買意欲などをそそるような効果を目的として制作され、広告宣伝業界では「3B」を用いることが伝統的な手法として定着している。「3B」とは、Beauty、Beast、Baby、つまり美（もしくは美女）・野獣（動物）・幼児（乳児）である。これら「3B」は、人間が漠然と物を見ているときにも目に留まりやすい心理効果を狙った事物であり、テレビ・ラジオなどのCM以外にも広告宣伝全般で応用されている。
CM の 製作者
CMの制作は、スポンサー(広告主)から依頼を受けた、広告代理店を中心として制作されることが多い。 広告代理店の企画担当者(クリエイティブディレクター、CMプランナー、コピーライターなど)が中心となって企画を作り、その後の実制作は広告制作会社・映像制作会社が行うことがほとんどである。近年では企画から制作会社が関わるケースも多く、CMディレクター、プロデューサー、プロダクションマネージャーといった職が存在する。そこからさらにCG制作会社、ポストプロダクション会社など、1本のCMが完成するまでに、さまざまな会社・人が関わり制作は進められる。
CMのディレクターは映画業界に倣って監督と呼ばれることが多く、役割は演出家である。一般的に、美大や芸大を出た後に、広告制作会社・映像制作会社に所属をしている。撮影から編集作業まで携わる。一方で、CMプランナーの役割は、脚本家と同じである。CMプランナーは主に広告会社に所属をしている。キャリアのスタートは、広告会社のコピーライターから。広告クリエイティブの基本である、コピーの作法を学び、それを基にしてCMの企画を考えるようになる。コピーライター養成講座を主催する宣伝会議には、CMプランナーを目指す方に向けた講座もあるため、そういった場で学び、転職や転局をするケースもある。
CMディレクターは、前述のように限られた秒数内で消費者や視聴者に訴求効果を与えるために実験的な視覚効果や映像技術を実践することもあるが、CMは芸術ではないので広告主の目的にそぐわない方向に演出が向かないよう、プランナーが歯止めをかける役目をすることもある。また、CMディレクターの中にはCM畑で養ったカット割りの技術やアングルやショット、笑いのセンス等の演出テクニックを評価され、映画監督として活躍する者もいる。
