05 To talk about imaginary situations

Would is sometimes used to refer to 
a situation that you can imagine happening.

The word would is used for unreal or imagined situations:

  • She would like to be professional footballer.
  • I would love to visit there.
  • I would hate to miss the show.
  • We would go, but we are too busy.
  • I would go myself but I am too busy.
  • It would have been quite boring to sit through the entire speech.

Would 05 仮定

現在または過去の事実に反したことを仮想したり、
現在・未来において起こりそうもないことを仮定する場合には、
should、wouldがよく用いられます。
  • If I had been more careful, I would not have hurt myself.
  • もっと気をつけていたら、けがをすることはなかったのだが
  • If a serious crisis should arise, the government would take immediate action.
  • 万一重大危機が生じたら、政府は即時行動をおこすだろう

 ■ would like / hate / love /prefer to [不定詞] 

would の「遠慮がち/丁寧な物言い」と、
to 不定詞 の未来性・義務性「これからすること、すべきこと」の合体。

would like to なら
「~したいとか思うんだけど/~すれば喜ばしいんですが」のニュアンスです。

would like + 目的語 + to 
目的語は to 不定詞 の意味上の主語です。

尚、would prefer to の否定は would prefer not to です。
wouldn't prefer to ではありません。また、would dislike to 不定詞 はありません。

  • We'd like you to come and visit us.
  • I would like for you to stay as long as you want.
  • I don't think he's very nice guy, I would not like to live under his governance.

◇ would hate to
  • I would hate to lose my cell phone. 
  • 私は携帯電話を失くしたくない。
  • I'd hate to live there. 
  • I'd hate you to go. 
  • I'd hate for him to think I wasn't interested.

  • I'd love for her to come and live with me.

◇ would prefer to / would prefer not to
  • She answered that she would prefer to walk.
  • Would you prefer me to stay?

 条件文:「I would 【したいこと】, but 【しない理由】.」 

この形式は重文を使っています。
そのため、【しない理由】は原形を使います。
  • I would go, but I don’t know where it’s at.
  • 行きたいのですが、場所がどこかわかりません。
  • I’d go see a movie, but I don’t have any money.
  • 映画を見に行きたいけど、お金がない。
  • I’d ride my bike, but it’s raining.
  • 自転車に乗りたいけど、雨が降っている。

 would ... anyway どっちみち/いずれにしても 

anyway は
あれこれあるけど重要なのは」という、
前言を整理訂正する表現。
  • I'm not going to invite her to the party. She wouldn't come anyway.
  • It was probably too late to say sorry, but she would try anyway.

 if はないが、他で条件を醸し出す時の would 

条件節( if )を使わなくても、他の方法で「条件」を醸し出す表現があります。
不定詞 ・ with/without ・ otherwise です。

■ to 不定詞 が「もし~ならば」の条件を醸し出す
  • Hurry up! It would be a shame to miss the beginning of the party.
  • It would be lovely to see you.
  • He'd be a fool to accept it.
  • You don't have to have insurance, but you would be wise to buy some.
  • It would have been very boring to sit through the whole speech.

■ with/without が「あれば」「なければ」の条件を醸し出す
  • She would look better with shorter hair.
  • I thought that without me the whole project would collapse.

■ otherwise が「そうでなければ」の条件を醸し出す

現在表現
  •      Of course I was wrong; I would be hypocritical to pretend otherwise.
過去表現 would have PP
  • I didn't get home until well after midnight last night. 
  • Otherwise, I would have returned your call.
  • I didn't know you were asleep. 
  • Otherwise, I wouldn't have made so much noise when I came in.
