In the April 2014 issue of Journal of Investigative Dermatology, a study suggests that dietary spirulina platensis can help prevent skin cancer. F. Yogianti at Kobe University, Kobe, Japan and colleagues conducted the study and found both mice that lacks a repair enzyme and is prone to developing UV-induced skin cancer and wild-type mice lowered risk of skin cancer when supplemented with spirulina. UV radiation can increase risk of skin cancer development by generating reactive oxygen species. Spirulina was found to suppress tumor induction and development in mice. The study concluded "S (spirulina). platensis exerts anti-tumor effects against UVB irradiation in the skin through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects."Statement analysis
Skin cancer is the most common cancer. Spirulina is a natural food that is full of all types of nutrients including macronutrients particularly proteins, phytochemicals, vitamins and mineral.
Its protein content is even higher than beef. It is considered a healthy food. (David LIu, PHD)

investigative
of or concerned with investigating something.
dermatology
the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders.
conduct
lead or guide (someone) to or around a particular place.
enzyme
a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
prone
likely to or liable to suffer from, do, or experience
UV radiation
Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays.
reactive oxygen species
Reactive oxygen species are chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen. Examples include oxygen ions and peroxides. ROS form as a natural byproduct of the normal metabolism of oxygen and have important roles in cell signaling and homeostasis.
suppress
forcibly put an end to.
exert
apply or bring to bear (a force, influence, or quality).
UVB
ultraviolet radiation of relatively short wavelengths.
irradiation
the process or fact of irradiating or being irradiated.the apparent extension of the edges of an illuminated object seen against a dark background.
through
up to and including (a particular point in an ordered sequence).
anti-inflammatory
(chiefly of a drug) used to reduce inflammation.
macronutrient
a substance required in relatively large amounts by living organisms, in particular.
