Slip on your sandals at 7 p.m. this week and look in the eastern sky, opposite where the sun disappeared. Measure a little over 3 fist-widths up from the horizon, and you’ll see three bright stars in a line that points toward the ground.

The bright red shoulder star is Betelgeuse. They named the movie monster well because Betelgeuse is one of the largest stars we know about. It’s so huge that if it replaced our sun, it would engulf all the planets out to and including Jupiter. A true monster and the sky’s 12th-brightest star. Orion’s upper foot (or knee) is Rigel, the seventh-brightest star. To the right of Orion’s feet is the sky’s brightest star, Sirius the Dog Star. It’s called the Dog Star because it’s in the constellation Canis Major the Big Dog. By one hour after sunset, the entire constellation will have trotted out of the eastern ocean in obedient pursuit of Orion, his master.
