誰もが、個人の生活経験や趣味、一般常識などに関して、自分の中に一定の「鑑賞の器」を持っている。私たちは作品に対面する時、無意識のうちにその「鑑賞の器」の中にあるものを総動員して、「作品から何かを感じ取ろう、理解しよう」としている。
深く「鑑賞の器」を掻き回してくれる作品、時には「鑑賞の器」をひっくり返しかねない作品は、その人にとって重要な作品であると考えられる。（例えば「鑑賞の器」に一般常識が強固に根付いている人は、そこから外れようとする作品が受け止められない事があるが、その反面、理解した場合の衝撃も大きい）。
