ヤクザ とは、
組織を形成して暴力を背景に職業的に犯罪活動に従事し、収入を得ているものを表す。この集団を特徴づける要因の一つに、集団内部の「親分子分」の結合がある。
ヤクザ の 語源
賭博用語が語源とする説が通説となっている。花札を使った「おいちょかぶ」という博奕では、3枚札を引いて合計値の一の位の大小を競う。8・9の目が出れば17となり、一般的な常識人にとっては『7』の場合「もう一枚めくる」ことはしないのだが、投機的で射幸心が強く、且つ非常識な輩は そこで「一か八かで、もう一枚を引く」。その結果で“3”を引き、最低の得点である“0”（8+9+3=20）となる。それに例えて、行動パターンや人生設計を「物賭け的に挑戦する者の生き方」を象徴的に表現しているという説である。 他にも、歌舞伎役者の派手な格好を真似た無法者（傾（かぶ）き者）の事を「役者のような」と言っていた事から「ヤクシャ」が訛って「ヤクザ」になったという説もある。
「ヤクザ」という単語は近年では言葉狩りの対象となっており、伏字処理が施されたり、隠語や別の表現に置き換えられる事例が多く見られる。石原裕次郎の楽曲『嵐を呼ぶ男』を2010年に舘ひろしがカバーした際に原曲の「ヤクザな...」が「やんちゃな...」に改変されたのが代表的な例である。『ヤクザ』を指す表現として、頬骨から顎先までを指でなぞり「これもん（Scarface：傷、痘痕のある顔を表現する）」などと置き換える場合もある。
ヤクザ と 作品
現在では、『ヤクザ (Yakuza)』という言葉を理解する他国の民も多い。テレビゲームでも、アメリカ製の『グランド・セフト・オートシリーズ』に日系人のマフィアが「ヤクザ」の名称で登場していたり、日本製の『龍が如く』が日本国外で『Yakuza』というタイトルで販売されたとの例がある。北野武監督のヤクザ映画も日本国外で人気が高い。

ヤクザ側から見た絶縁とは、擬制的親子関係で組織を構成するヤクザ組織の掟の中で最も重い処罰である。これより軽い処分として、破門があるが、違いは、破門には復縁の可能性があるのに対して、絶縁には建前上それがないという点にある。破門であれば交流のない他の組に移るなどしてヤクザ渡世を続ける事もできる。
組は絶縁した旨を義理回状により、関係の組に通知する。この絶縁状を受けた組織は、「絶縁された者」を、客分としたり、結縁したり、商談、交際など一切の物事について、相手としてはならないとされ、これを破る事は敵対行為とみなされる。したがって、「絶縁された者」は、ヤクザ世界に残る事は難しい。
いずれはそれぞれの道を歩み、それぞれの人生を生きていく。
